A defense attorney told jurors in suburban Philadelphia that a woman acted in self-defense when she shot and killed her estranged husband. Attorney Ann Faust told the Bucks County panel on Monday that 51-year-old Dorleen Burklund of Springfield Township “is not a murderer.” She said Burklund was so afraid of 47 Michael Burklund that she obtained a license to carry a weapon just before the October 2010 slaying. She said Dorleen Burklund was attacked by her husband and defended herself by shooting him eight times. First Assistant District Attorney Michelle Henry called the slaying “malicious and intentional.” Another attorney Anthony Muir has said that Michael Burklund “was concerned for his personal safety,” and complained to him that Dorleen Burklund had unexpectedly moved back into their home shortly before the killing. She hired a locksmith to open the locks Michael Burklund had changed after the couple reached a post-nuptial agreement that included her moving out and him selling the house.

The way I read this, she bought a gun and forced her way back into the house against a court order and then found an excuse to shoot her husband. If she was really concerned about safety, why would she move back in? Buying a gun has one real purpose—-to KILL. She could have gotten a host of other things if she was worried about self defense.

An alleged rapist had been on the loose since March 26. There were two separate incidents in Troy on March 26 the first assault took place about 3 p.m. when a man forced his way into the victim’s home. The second attack took place about four hours later when a woman reported to police that she was assaulted while visiting a family member in the neighborhood. The alleged attacks result in frayed nerves for many Troy University students and city residents, especially those who live at Hunter’s Mountain. Many of the residents who live at Hunter’s Mountain took extra precautions to secure their homes including window locks, extra door locks and alarms. Some bought mace, pepper spray or firearms.

Stabbed by Her Boyfriend

Melissa started getting calls and texts around 2:30 a.m. Her ex-boyfriend said he had to see her. He was crying, saying he missed her. She told him to stop because she had class in the morning but he kept calling and texting. Around 3 a.m., he said he was near her house. He only needed two seconds. He just wanted a hug. He had hurt her before, but she wasn’t scared because he sounded sad and vulnerable. She walked out the door and down near the Park. He asked for a hug, so she put her arms around him. Then she heard a click and felt a sharp pain, first in her neck, then in her shoulder. He stabbed and punched her over and over. The knife pierced her head, arms and hands. She heard the knife crack against her skull. She felt him knock her teeth loose. She was begging and screaming. Then she couldn’t scream anymore. This is an except fom a recent article in the Tampa Bay Times. Melisa survived thanks to several people, but let it be a warning to all of us to be prepared at all times. You never know what could happen. Find some type of self defense and plan how you’ll use it.

According to RAINN-Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, an organization sponsored by many people such as Christina Ricci 80% of victims are under age 30 and someone is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes. Thats alot!! In addition they reprt that 54% of assaults go unreported and that 2/3 of them are by someone they knew. Sounds like a good reason to be prepared. Most people dont think it will ever happen to them, especially the young because they believe they are invincible. Get trained in self defense and learn something. You might just save yourself a friend or a loved one as well. Carry Mace pepperspray or a stun gun. But do something!
